SIA: Carp(e) diem

For this week’s SIA challenge (Style Imitating Art), Salazar chose a traditional Vietnamese woodcut painting to celebrate the Lunar New Year. These paintings originated from the village of Dong Ho, so they’re called “Dong Ho paintings.”  The theme of this painting is called “Carp,” a symbol of good luck and success.

Inspiration:

Interpretation:

This one took me awhile, I have to admit. Maybe because I just wore my green cardigan for the last SIA challenge? I was getting stuck on the colors. So I just stood in my closet and waited for inspiration to strike… and then I spied my abstract floral print peplum vest. Light bulb! The peplum vest has a vaguely Asian pattern with the ginko leaves, and the pattern has a lot of movement in it, like the painting. That was my starting point.

Details:  Floral peplum vest:  Phillip Lim for Target {special collection sold out but here’s a cool floral print peplum shell} {pretty rose print peplum tank in two color schemes}  /  Burgundy ankle pants:  Redyed, Macy’s {similar}  /  Champagne flats:  Payless {similar}  /  Teal long-sleeved t-shirt:  Gap?, old {similar and other colors}  /  Ceramic triangle earrings:  Local artist {exact}

The interpretation is a looser one. But as you can see, I seized the day — carp(e) diem! — and deepened the colors in the inspiration painting to better suit my coloring (and my wardrobe). I deepened the green in the Dong Ho painting to teal (my long-sleeved t-shirt), and the orangey red tones to burgundy (redyed ankle pants).

The round-up for this week’s SIA choice will be on Salazar’s blog, 14 Shades of Grey, tomorrow morning. Can’t wait to see what y’all came up with! 🙂

Here are also two other ways I’ve remixed this peplum vest.

    The pattern in your peplum is perfect (a lot of Ps). The movement in the pattern reminds me of Koi or carp swimming, maybe under a thin layer of ice. Lovely colors. Great interpretation. I updated my post to include Jess’s info and a link to her blog. Can’t figure out how to comment on her blog, though. Have a great week, Jen!

      What a lovely comment with tons of imagery. You totally nailed what I meant by the pattern on my vest having movement. I do love this vest — the only piece I picked up from the Phillip Lim boutique collection for Target. It’s a rare pattern that is both bold AND subtle. 🙂
