SIA: Cafe cloche

Have you entered my V-Day jewelry giveaway with Greg Michaels yet? Click here for all the details on how to enter. The giveaway is open to U.S. and international readers through this Thursday, Feb. 12, and I will announce the winner Friday, Feb. 13.

This week’s SIA (Style Imitating Art) challenge comes from Jess @ Animated Cardigan, who chose a classic work from a classic American painter, Edward Hopper, the 1927 “Automat” painting. Also, make sure you check out everyone else’s interpretations on the SIA round-up on Animated Cardigan!

Automat – 1927 – Edward Hopper

Interpretation:

There were no automats that I could find in Portland — y’all know I checked, right? — but I thought this back patio room at one of my favorite local cafes made for a decent alternative. The twinkly lights overhead also fit in with the lights reflected in the glass in the painting. (Note:  The lighting overall wasn’t great, so the colors and textures in my photos are a bit grainy and inconsistent. But that also kind of fits the mood, right? 😉 )

It all started with the cloche hat (of course), and then the Oxford Mary Janes. I then focused on the color palette of the painting, mixing greens, browns, and bronze together. I’m also layering my green cardigan over a brown dress. I went with the dress — as opposed to a skirt — because of its dotted pattern, which I thought played off the round lights in the painting. I haven’t worn this dress in awhile, so it felt good to get it out again. 🙂

Details:  Green cardigan:  August Silk via Macy’s {exact in different colors}  /  Brown dotted dress:  Thrifted, old {very similar}  /  Brown felt cloche hat:  LOFT, old {very similar}  /  Brown ribbed tights: ?, old {very similar}  /  Bronze Mary Jane heels:  Franco Sarto, thrifted {similar style in different colors}  /  Long gold necklace:  My grandmother’s, vintage {very similar}  /  Gold-and-crystal necklace:  c/o Greg Michaels {exact}

      So sweet, thanks, Salazar! I got quite a few compliments when I wore this. At the end of the day — which was last Friday — when I was walking out to my car, a student actually ran back up the sidewalk to tell me that she loved my outfit and that I looked great. She then said, “You should go out on the town in that outfit!” The best thing — besides the compliment — is that I WAS going out after work. You can bet I went with an extra-wide smile on my face. 😀
