Marsala closet inventory

The new Pantone Color of the Year, “Marsala,” was announced last month, so I know this post is one in a long line of marsala-related posts already out there in the style blogosphere. I remember when in early December, a colleague asked me, “So is your closet stocked with marsala?” Gotta admit, I wasn’t sure what she was talking about (!) — at first, I thought “marsala” was a clothing company brand. But then after I looked it up, I went, “Oh! It’s like burgundy!”

The Pantone colors of the year sometimes make me roll my eyes — like with the “radiant orchid” pick last year that I didn’t even bother to blog about. But marsala, although it feels like a fancy variation on the words “burgundy,” “maroon,” “wine,” “russet,” or the 2012 mini-trend of “oxblood,” is a color flattering to many skin tones — and probably already in many closets!

So that’s what I did:  I shopped my own closet and took stock of what I already have that reflects the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year.

I’ve had all these marsala-related items for awhile, and they’re all out of stock online, but below are links similar to the items I have in my closet:

Basics:  trousers  /  pencil skirt  /  ankle pants  /  knit dress

Patterned Pieces:  novelty print sweater  /  tweed skirt  /  patterned ankle pants

Accessories:  tote bag  /  tights  /  scarf  /  flats  /  nail polish

I will end this post with a reiteration of my colleague’s inquiry:  Is your closet stocked already with marsala? Please share and leave a comment! 🙂

I love that your immediate thought was “it’s like burgundy.” I thought the same thing and then I’m like, I’m totally covered for this one.

I love me some burgundy, which I think I have more of in my closet than red. If I am thinking of adding a color in my wardrobe that I don’t have — like mint when it was a mini-trend a couple of years ago — then I first try it out through nail polish, to see if I like it first before going all out on a piece of clothing. Perhaps try that for marsala/burgundy?
