SIA: Metallic shimmer inspiration

If you haven’t already, voting is still open to pick your favorite outfit of mine last month! I’ll post the 2014 retrospective of monthly favorites later this week.

For this week’s SIA challenge, Salazar chose Berthe Morisot‘s 1883 painting, “Young Woman Watering a Shrub.” Morisot was a French painter and one of the few female Impressionists.

There’s still time to participate in this week’s SIA challenge! Send along a pic of something inspired by this painting to Salazar at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tonight, January 12. She will post a round-up post the next day on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey.

Interpretation:

I have to admit, I was a little stuck at first. So I showed my husband the painting and asked what he thought, and his answer really intrigued me. He said he would go for something “shiny or metallic” first because it looks like the ground in the painting is shiny and grey due to recent rain. The “shiny or metallic” idea appealed to me, so I began with my grey flats, which have a subtle metallic shimmer. Then that led me to pairing my mom’s vintage white sheath with my grey cardigan. I then added my cognac tassel belt, which I felt tied in with the tassels on the back of the woman’s dress and also tied into the color of the chairs in the background.

As always with me, the accessories and finishing touches were also significant. These dangly earrings, a recent Christmas gift from my friend Stephanie, were perfect for this inspiration, with the delicate black filigree detailing. I added my red handbag to pull in the reddish pops of color in the painting, and the gold caps on the handbag straps are quite similar in shape to the gold trim on the earrings.

Even though it took longer than usual to come up with this inspiration outfit, I really felt good about the final result. Still modern and comfy, but there’s something soft and feminine about it that reflects the vibe of the painting. And it all started with the “metallic shimmer” inspiration from my husband!

And this marks the fifth (!) time I’ve remixed this vintage white dress of my mom’s for an SIA challenge. (And you might notice that this past fall, I’ve let out the hem a bit to make the dress properly knee-length and more comfortable.)

This outfit really pulled together so nicely with the grey and white and then the red bag. Love it. Your husband’s idea of the metallic piece was so spot on and captured the painting’s vision. Well done. Love it.
