SIA: Celebrate

It’s my turn to curate the next Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, and I chose husband-and-wife artist duo, Charles and Ray Eames, best known for their modern furniture designs. This amazingly prolific artistic team also made several beautiful short films together, and I chose one of their earliest films, “Parade, Or Here They Come Down Our Street” (1952). It features a march by John Philip Sousa, and the film is full of bright, cheerful colors and textures.

And there is still time to participate in SIA. All you need to do is take a picture of something you’ve worn inspired by this week’s inspiration piece, and email it to me at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com by tonight (10pm PST). I’ll post the round-up on my blog tomorrow morning.

I had several outfit ideas inspired by this short film, in particular by the vivid colors captured in this screenshot:

Today is also my mom’s birthday, so I was feeling the happy, celebratory feeling from the short film. So OF COURSE I set out to find what balloons we had in the house — and how perfect that I found a happy face balloon?!

Happy birthday, Mom!

My outfit is actually quite simple but also bright and cheerful. I thought about layering a navy cardigan over my blue gingham shirt, but in the end, I thought that looked too busy. The bright blue, ribbed sweater really pops against the patterned pants (the pattern has navy in the middle of the pink-and-maroon cross pattern), and the scoop neckline is striking. I haven’t worn this blue sweater in awhile; you can also see it in action here, here and here. I also chose gold hoop earrings to echo the lines of the scoop neckline.

And OF COURSE my husband had to have me pose with the smiley face balloon in front of my face. So here y’all go. All to make my husband smile. (And hopefully, you too. 😉 )

Hah! Yes, it was a happy accident to find the smiley face balloons! I wasn’t sure if we had ANY balloons in the house, but I knew I wanted a balloon to help celebrate my mom’s birthday. But I should have realized if we had any balloons, it would be smiley face balloons, as my husband collects smiley face things. 😀

I want to say they’re left over from my birthday last year? Or something like that — I was actually surprised that when you found them, they weren’t in my smiley face collection!
