What I got (November 2014)

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving to my American readers! As I’ve written about before, the Thanksgiving holiday has become more meaningful to me and my husband, as it’s also our house anniversary. So we are holing up in our house for the holiday, with eating pumpkin pie and snuggling with our kitties the top priorities. And we are not participating in any “Black Friday” excursions, but we might get started on our Christmas lists on “Small Business Saturday” to help support our local, unique shops.

And there’s no need for me to do any more clothes shopping for the month, as I’ve already done more than my share during November. Here’s a round-up of what I got during this past month:

I still had a little over $35 leftover on a Macy’s gift card from this fall, so I picked up some basics, including a pair of cobalt blue leggings and replacing two items:  a lost pair of black leather gloves and my beloved grey cardigan (which has a hole in it — but I was able to replace it with the SAME BRAND, August Silk, which also happens to be my favorite cardigan brand).

Librarian for LIfe + Style | What I got (November 2014)

  • Fleece-lined leather gloves from Charter Club for Macy’s {exact}:  $41.25 (original price $75, on sale for $56.25, used $15 off coupon)
  • Cobalt blue leggings from Spanx for Macy’s {same brand in teal} {very similar}:  $48
  • Grey cardigan from August Silk for Macy’s {exact}:  $0 (original price $34.98, used $35 Macy’s gift card)

As I recently donated a sleeveless black top that didn’t really fit my hips, I was on the lookout for a replacement. And then I remembered my awesome cream sleeveless blouse that I got at Kohl’s last winter, last seen here, and then I remembered how many color and pattern variations there are of this top, so off to Kohls.com I went… and then I also spied these racer-stripe ponte leggings, at left in the pic below. Obviously, I am into building up my legging collection. And these are just.SO.cool. I also thought they would pair well with my new bandage dress, detailed at the end of this post.

But you’ll note that in the pic above, I did NOT receive a black top; because of a website error, I received an odd brown snakeskin version instead, seen at right above. So I have had to return the snakeskin pattern. SIGH.

  • Pink knot-front top from Dana Buchman for Kohl’s {exact}:  $13.99 (original price $30, on sale for $19.99, used 30% off coupon)
  • Black ponte racer stripe leggings from Spanx for Kohl’s {exact}:  $28 (original price $50, on sale for $40, used 30% off coupon)

And because I racked up over $50 on that order — earning free shipping — I also received a $10 Kohl’s cash coupon, which I put to good use the next week combined with a 20% off coupon. In the clearance racks, I picked up this pink + navy-striped top (yes, it’s a dark navy even though it looks black in the pic below).

  • Pink & navy-striped top from Croft & Barrow for Kohl’s {similar} {thin-striped option}:  $2.24 (original price $32, on clearance for $12.80, used $10 Kohl’s cash + 20% off coupon)

Shopping locally

At the start of the month, two of my husband’s Scottish cousins came to Portland for a visit — so fun!!! — and one of our last stops before they continued on their travels was the well-known Saturday Market in downtown Portland. I couldn’t resist these lovely triangle-shaped ceramic earrings by local artist Dana Godfrey. They’re a milky bluish-white, and I’ve been looking for this kind of earring shape since cutting my hair.

  • Ceramic & copper earrings from Copperworks by Dana Godfrey {similar}:  $24, Saturday Market stall

The skirt below was admittedly an impulse buy, as we wandered through Rerun, our local thrift store. But an Ann Taylor brown tweed pencil skirt in like-new condition and in my size for $9? Welcome to my closet.

It also helps that it has interesting details like a small slit in both the front and back, plus a fabric belt which I can use with other items.

  • Brown tweed pencil skirt with belt from Ann Taylor {similar}:  $9, thrifted (original price $88)

I am also in need of pajamas, especially for winter, so I used a 20% off coupon + a rewards gift card at my local Fred Meyer store to snag this red tartan, flannel pajama set with black piping. Super cute!

  • Red tartan pajama set from Fred Meyer {very similar}:  $7.32 (original price $40, on sale for $19.99, used $8.67 in rewards + 20% off apparel coupon)

TOTAL SPENT = $177.80

The Kewl Shop

And last but not least, I received a complementary bandage dress of my choice this past month from The Kewl Shop, in exchange for a review (and my honest opinions). I reviewed this gorgeous butterfly-print dress yesterday.

I can’t wait to try this dress out with my new leggings — look for an upcoming post next week!

  • Butterfly-print, flared bandage dress {exact}:  c/o The Kewl Shop (original price $154)

I definitely shopped more than usual this past month, but looking back, it feels good to see that I replaced a few items and also focused a lot on basics. 🙂

That dress is awesome that you received. I have so much to catch up on with my blog reading. How weird that you received the wrong top all together. So strange.

I know, right? The snakeskin print is labeled “black tie,” so it got mixed up with the black color I actually ordered. But what about brown snakeskin says “black tie” in the first place? And OF COURSE they’re out of the black top, which was the entire reason I went on Kohls.com to begin with. Sigh. It doesn’t mean that much in the grand scheme of things, I know, but it’s annoying. Oh well, I’ll just keep looking for a simple black sleeveless top.

Love your picks! Great deals! That dress is awesome. Love the color of the leggings, too. I’m a big fan of monochromatic looks and that blue looks great with gray, black or winter white.
