Casual stripes + short hair

Today’s outfit is a casual weekend look I wore to an afternoon movie date with  my husband. I wasn’t planning on pics, but then I realized that although I had worn this cute striped top several times in real life the past month, it hadn’t yet made it onto the blog.

Oversight corrected. And such a simple look — it’s a t-shirt, jeans, and flats, that’s it! — but the stripes and the short hair combine for some extra sass!

And then after taking the pics, I thought of Jean Seberg in the classic 1960 French film Breathless and how my newly short hair and stripes could be a modern riff off Seberg’s iconic look. I love the ease of Seberg’s style, both with her hairstyle and stripes. No wonder this look has proved inspirational ever since — I think it’s entered our sartorial subconscious.

I even have stripes on my jeans. Pattern-mixing at it simplest!

Details:  Red & navy striped top:  Chaps via Kohl’s, birthday gift from my mom {exact but almost sold out} {cute option with long sleeves} {super cute short-sleeve sweater option} /  Tuxedo-stripe skinny jeans:  LOFT, last fall {same brand and style in white} {similar} /  Black ballet flats:  Payless, old {very similar}  /  Red cotton jacket:  Macy’s, gift-carded two winters ago {similar}

And a final shot with my cotton red jacket. It’s definitely getting a bit chillier up here, so it’s great to have a light jacket to throw on, just in case. And red is such a bright, cheerful color!
