What I got (July 2014)

This month’s budget post was going to be a goose egg (meaning $0 spent!)… until this last week when I finally found the dress I had been searching for all month.

Let me explain.

In early July, my husband and I had an afternoon date to watch the movie Begin Again, starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, directed by John Carney, the same guy who directed the 2006 movie Once. I enjoyed the film, but I REALLY enjoyed Keira Knightley’s adorable tomboy-meets-vintage wardrobe. So much so that I posted about it on my Facebook page:

I scoured the interwebs and local shops for a similar red floral dress and came across several possibles, including this one at ModCloth (ultimately too short) and this one at eShakti (not floral), but nothing really spoke to me. And then I found it. One day, Sam and I were driving past a local neighborhood street that boasts quite a few resale boutiques, and in one of the shop windows, I spied a bright floral dress with the kind of vintage-inspired details I was looking for. Except it wasn’t red… it was ORANGE.

Me. In an orange dress. I have come a long way, baby.

When I slipped it on, it just felt right. I think the orange actually works on me because it is such a saturated orange (I tend to go for saturated colors, which look better against my pale skin), and the length is just right. It’s not an exact match, obviously, for the inspiration dress; the floral print is much bigger, the neckline is different, and it’s orange. But the shape is definitely vintage-inspired, like I wanted, and it has special details like ruched sleeves and a swingy skirt.

The dress is not flawless — the shape is a little blousey up front (which I can easily alter by taking in the sides a bit if I want to), and I will definitely need to utilize my recently revealed trick of wearing a sports bra as a layering piece. But I love it. I feel pretty in this dress. And when I came out of the dressing room, and my husband heard the tone of my voice as I said that sentence, “I feel pretty,” he knew this was the dress for me. ♥

And I love the dress even more when I looked up the brand, Loco Lindo, online (the name means “crazy cute” in Spanish), and realized that style of dress — the “Rita” — retails at $158! And I got mine at a mere $37! (And by the way, there actually IS a red version on sale at the Loco Lindo website — for $142. I will still take my orange version for less than $40. 😉 )

While at the boutique, I also scored this sweet, Y-shape beaded necklace. I liked the delicate beads combined with the chunky stone.

Next month — or perhaps I will wait until September — I have some coupons and gift cards saved for some major back-to-school shopping. It’s a good thing I work in academia, as I still get a thrill of anticipation when it comes to back-to-school shopping. 🙂

Oh, and by the way, don’t forget I’m still gathering guest posts for August while we’re away on vacation… read all the details here and send me an email if you’re interested!

I really want to see that movie! I have an unreasonable amount of love for Mark Ruffalo, and the previews look good.

I shy away from orange for myself, too, but your new dress is so pretty! I look forward to outfit photos 🙂 The necklace is beautiful, also; earthy and elegant at the same time.

It’s lovely! Well done on finding it. I love it. Funnily enough, I do believe I saw a similar dress to the inspiration yesterday in the Topshop sale! X

That dress is really pretty! I love vintage dress look – it also reminds me of the dress the character wore in the movie Bread & Tulips! I’m also on an academic calendar (28 years and counting) and I love back to school shopping – I hate to admit that summer is more than half over though (but at least we don’t start until after Labor day!)
