My SIA choice this time around is the famous red “Flamingo” sculpture outside the Federal Plaza in Chicago. The sculpture, created by American artist Alexander Calder, was constructed in 1974.
Here’s an angle I captured of this sculpture during my visit to Chicago last summer:
And here’s what I wore inspired by this sculpture. At first, I thought of pairing my abstract chevron top with my red ankle pants, and then realized I had already done that. So then I went for a red + grey color palette, paired with my houndstooth tights to add that extra graphic detail. And of course we had to scout around a bit for a wall of windows for a backdrop (I even love the extra texture those blinds are providing).
Details: Red cardigan: August Silk via Macy’s, gift-carded last month / Grey dress: eShakti, this fall / Houndstooth tights: Kohl’s, gift-carded this winter / Grey flats: DKNY via Macy’s, fall 2011 / Grey leather belt: Fashion-swapped this fall / Pearl necklace: Wedding gift from husband, old / Pearl earrings: Made by friend in Abu Dhabi, 2011
Some of the pieces I’m wearing might look new. This is the first time I’m wearing this red cardigan, which I bought last month as a replacement. Same with this grey dress that has interesting seaming details (also seen here). The houndstooth tights are new, making their second visit to the blog (also seen here). The silver belt I picked up at this fall’s fashion swap, but it’s the first time I’m wearing it.
And there’s still time to submit your picture for this week’s SIA post. Just send me a pic inspired by the SIA sculpture at firstname.lastname@example.org. The round-up post will go live tomorrow morning.
