2013 shopping list: Back to basics

For this week’s Friday’s Fancies link-up, “New Year, New You,” I got inspired to put together a shopping list, one for the entire year. Yesterday, I highlighted the trends I tried last year, but looking ahead, I realized that I need to reinvest in some basics. So this inspiration board is to help keep me on the path to fill some gaps (more like gaping holes) in my wardrobe.

My husband’s initial response? “So when you check off this list, that’s it for the entire year? I approve of this plan!” 😉

GAP princess seam dress, gap.com

I need a basic black shift dress. I have a basic black skirt, seen here, and three black dresses (1 shirtdress, 1 one-shoulder, and 1 dressy), but no basic, work-appropriate black shift dress. Also, my vintage white shift dress needs someone to talk to.

Crew neck cardigan, augustsilk.com

Cardigans are must-have items of clothing for librarians. And these August Silk cardigans are the best overall that I’ve found. I’ve already got this cardigan style in grey, seen here.

H m, hm.com

Last year, I focused on building up my stripes collection; this year, it’s polka dots.

Anne Klein long jacket, macys.com

No navy blazer in my wardrobe?! Shame on me. I don’t like shiny buttons, so the tonal buttons on this blazer are right up my alley.

J Crew j crew, jcrew.com

I finally gave skinny jeans a try last year, and ended up loving them. This year, I’d like to try to find a pair of figure-flattering ankle pants.

Cole haan flat, piperlime.gap.com

I used to have a pair of red patent leather flats, and literally wore the soles off them. I have been on the hunt for another pair of red patent leather flats ever since. Nearly two years on, it’s been a harder search than I initially anticipated.

Indigo by clark, zappos.com

After 5+ years, my black ankle boots are finally starting to go, so I’m on the lookout for a replacement pair. I like the classic lines of this pair.

LA FEMME platform shoes, payless.com

Fifteen pairs of black shoes — you can check, all my shoes are on display in this post — and no basic black pumps. Shame on me. I do have a pair of black Mary Jane heels, seen here, but I usually pair them with pants or black stockings so as to not visually shorten my legs.

Deena Ozzy satchel handbag, urbanoutfitters.com

A grey bag for work. I’m not adventurous in my selection of work bags — I need them sturdy and big enough to carry files, etc. around. I have work totes in brown, black, and dark red, but no grey. YET.

Belt, target.com

I need some more skinny belts in my wardrobe, and patent leather is a perennial favorite.

What’s on your wish list for the new year? Please leave a comment and let me know.

I just bought some killer blue ankle pants on sale at LOFT!
I’m not sure I need anything else this year. Maybe something green (since that is the color of the year) but I’m not sure what yet. I need to do a big closet purge soon and then I’ll have a better idea.

Ha. I love your picks for the year, but your husband’s response is my favorite! Sorry hunny… I don’t think I could stick to such a reasonable list… Have a great weekend love!

My own favorite comment today was the moment when Jennifer asked if we could try just one more store. I said, “Sure! There are still more clothes for me to make fun of.”

Just the stuff on the racks, though — I never have cause to make fun of what Jennifer picks out. 🙂

Hi. Glad to find your blog through FBFF! I like the idea of putting together a shopping list for basics. I tend to buy statement pieces when I’m out and never seem to have a good supply of basics when I need them.

I run into the same problem! I think that’s why there are so many gaps in my wardrobe. Why buy a basic black dress when you can buy a bold, striped jacket? But I’m glad I’m following through with filling these gaps — it will help with building outfits in the long run. 🙂
